Stainless Steel

Types of stainless steel

Austenitic stainless steel

  • Contains Cr more than 17% Ni more than 7%
  • Austenite is stabilized at all temperature
  • Good ductility, toughness & weldability.

Ferritic stainless Steel

  • Primary Iron-Chromium alloy
  • High Cr contents provide good resistant to scaling at high temp
  • Difficult to weld

Martensitic Stainless steel

  • Fe- Cr alloys with less Cr and more Carbon
  • On heating transforms to austenite & on cooling transforms to Martensite
  • High hardenability characteristic & low ductility
  • Preheat & post heat treatment is recommended.

Duplex Stainless Steel

  • Consists of two microstructure phases
  • Has alloying elements like Mo, N, Cu, W, Ni etc
  • Has high strength, Good toughness & high corrosion resistance
