It has always very challenging to weld cast Iron due to its high & free graphite contents. It needs utmost care while handling cast Iron due to its erratic response to welding.

 

There are four basic types of cast Iron

Grey Cast Iron

  • Soft
  • Less brittle
  • Highly machinable
  • Good weldability

Malleable Cast Iron

  • Soft
  • Better strength
  • Machinable
  • Good Weldability

Nodular Cast Iron

  • High Strength
  • Resists shock
  • Highly machinable
  • Good Weldability

Chilled/White Cast Iron

  • Hard
  • Brittle
  • Abrasion Resistant
  • Poor Weldability
